Software supply index · new apps per month

New apps are arriving 4.6× as fast as in 2025.

F-Droid, a volunteer-reviewed catalogue with no AI angle, July to September 2026 against its 2025 monthly average. 968 different developers in 2026 so far, against 419 in all of 2025.

April to September 2026 against the 2025 monthly average. The busiest single F-Droid developer made 2.2% of this year's new apps, so the step is a crowd, not a few prolific publishers.

A burst is one day carrying most of the fortnight: usually a class assignment, a hackathon or a single viral post. A steady rush keeps arriving for days. The newest two days are still being collected, so they are left off. Only sources that publish a creation date can appear here.

A repo counts as still going at an age if it was still receiving pushes that long after creation, and each point only counts repos we have watched that long. The idle-time panel follows 75,276 repos across 61 days of daily snapshots.

Same idea, different planet · the most-built ideas in the index

The most-built ideas are huge on the App Store and invisible on GitHub.

Bars show how many of each idea exist on each side. The number under each bar is how the best one is doing.

Stars and ratings measure different audiences, so compare within a side, not across. The App Store side comes from term searches, so it leans towards apps that already have ratings.

How we measure

Five notes that keep these charts honest
  1. Supply. F-Droid and Flathub are full sweeps, dated by each catalogue's own added or first-release date. The Arch and App Store figures come from term searches and show direction, not level. F-Droid added only 6 apps in February 2026, which looks like a review backlog; the summer months stand without March.
  2. Heating up. Ranked by how much of each idea-cluster was created in the window, weighted by volume, with at least twelve new projects. Clusters whose centres sit within cosine 0.91 of each other are the same idea split in two and are folded into one card.
  3. Gold rush. The idea-cluster with the most new projects over any two consecutive days in the last 90 days. Stars are read from GitHub by the daily refresh.
  4. Survival. GitHub only, since the catalogues and web builders publish no last-change date. "AI-built" is mostly detected from builder boilerplate in the README (Lovable, Bolt), so it measures builder exports, not all AI-assisted code.
  5. Not a census. The index finds GitHub repos through searches and the App Store through search terms. Every figure on this page is computed live from the index; see the monthly reports and clusters for the underlying lists.
